Valrico Sod & Mulch Installation
Valrico sits just east of Brandon, and while the two blur together along SR-60, Valrico yards tend to be bigger and the setting a little more rural. Much of the area was citrus groves and farmland within living memory, and you can still see it in the layout: homes set back on half-acre and larger lots, long driveways, old oaks left standing at the edge of what used to be a grove, and pockets of acreage between the subdivisions. Golf-course communities like River Hills, near the Alafia River, and the established Bloomingdale-area neighborhoods round out the mix.
That variety means Valrico projects range from a modest front-yard refresh to multi-pallet installs on large properties where grass choice can swing the budget by thousands of dollars.
Valrico lawns: matching grass to lot size and use
On larger Valrico lots, the most cost-effective approach is often a split. Argentine Bahia covers back acreage, side lots and areas the sprinklers do not reach — it is the least expensive sod we install and can largely live on summer rain once established. Near the house, Floratam St. Augustine gives the thick, dark lawn most people expect. On show yards and in the golf communities, many owners step up to Empire Zoysia: denser, finer-textured, more wear-tolerant, and the closest thing to a manicured fairway look you can get in a home lawn here.
We will be honest about trade-offs. Bahia throws summer seedheads and attracts mole crickets; Zoysia costs more and fills in slower if damaged; Floratam struggles in shade. The right answer depends on how you use the yard and what you want to spend.

Valrico soil: mostly sand, with heavier pockets
Most of Valrico sits on the same fast-draining sand as the rest of Hillsborough County, but some properties have pockets of heavier, slower-draining soil — areas that stay wet longer after a storm, or feel noticeably firmer underfoot. Former grove ground can also be uneven, with old rows, low spots and leftover roots. We probe and walk the lot before quoting, and where drainage or grade is off we handle it with bed prep and leveling before any sod goes down.
Valrico, FL at a Glance
Valrico is an unincorporated community in eastern Hillsborough County. SR-60 runs east–west through its northern side, Bell Shoals Road and Lithia Pinecrest Road are the main north–south routes, and Bloomingdale Avenue ties it to Brandon to the west. The Alafia River winds along the southern edge, where River Hills and other riverside neighborhoods sit among mature oaks. Head east and you are quickly toward Dover and Plant City; head south and you reach Lithia and FishHawk.
Some Valrico homes irrigate from wells, especially on older, larger properties. We check coverage and pressure before installing St. Augustine or Zoysia on those systems.

Mulch and pine straw in Valrico
With so many mature oaks and big beds, Valrico properties use a lot of ground cover. Pine straw covers large natural areas under trees for less than bark mulch and holds well through summer storms; pine bark or cypress mulch suits the defined beds near the house. Either way, a clean edge keeps the lawn and the beds from blending into each other.
Timing an install in Valrico
Big Bahia installs on large lots are easiest to establish once the rainy season starts in June, when afternoon storms take much of the watering burden off wells and long irrigation runs. St. Augustine and Zoysia near the house can go in year-round with proper watering, though April and May are the toughest months anywhere in Tampa Bay. Fall is a good, mild window for show-yard Zoysia.
New sod care in Valrico
Plan on daily watering for roughly the first two weeks, then a gradual taper. Hillsborough County and SWFWMD rules generally allow extra watering during a new-lawn establishment period (typically any day for the first 30 days and a reduced schedule in days 31–60, within allowed hours), and restrictions can apply to well users too. Confirm the current rule with Hillsborough County Public Utilities or SWFWMD, and keep your install invoice as proof of the date. More in our watering rules guide.

Yes, including the 33594 and 33596 ZIP codes, from SR-60 south through Bloomingdale and River Hills, with no trip charge.
Argentine Bahia, at $0.50 to $0.80 per square foot installed. Many owners use Bahia on the outer acreage and St. Augustine or Zoysia near the house.
If you want the densest, most manicured look and the yard gets good sun, Empire Zoysia is excellent. It costs more ($1.05 to $1.60 per square foot installed) and repairs more slowly, so it suits owners who want a show yard.
Some Valrico properties have pockets of heavier, slower-draining soil, and former grove ground can have low spots. We address grade and drainage with leveling and fill before installing sod.
Yes. Get your HOA’s approval on grass type and mulch color first; we can provide specs for the submission.
Often, but we check pressure and zone coverage first. If the well struggles, Bahia or a staged install can be the smarter route.
Yes. Sod pallets and bulk mulch delivery are both available, and on large Valrico lots many owners do part of the work themselves.
Under big oaks across larger areas, pine straw usually wins on cost and stays put in storms. Near the house, bark or cypress mulch gives a more finished look.
