Apollo Beach Sod & Mulch Installation
Apollo Beach is the one place in our service area where the bay shapes nearly every landscaping decision. The community sits right on the eastern shore of Tampa Bay, and its older core was built around a network of dredged saltwater canals, so a large share of homes back onto water with a seawall and a dock. Yards here are typically built on sandy fill, sit low, and live with constant breeze, salt spray on windy days, and the very real risk of storm surge during hurricane season.
Inland, the picture shifts to newer master-planned communities — MiraBay with its own waterfront canals, and Waterset to the east — where lots are smaller, landscaping is newer and HOA guidelines set the standard for grass type and mulch color.
Apollo Beach lawns: salt-tolerant St. Augustine
For waterfront lawns, grass choice comes down to salt tolerance. St. Augustine is one of the more salt-tolerant warm-season grasses available as sod in Florida, and Floratam is the usual pick for sunny canal-front and bayfront yards. Where a home has more shade from palms, oaks or the house itself, Palmetto and CitraBlue St. Augustine are options worth discussing. Zoysia can work on the inland side, but on the most exposed waterfront lots we usually steer owners toward St. Augustine. Bahia, which performs well on big inland lots elsewhere in the county, is generally not our recommendation for salt-exposed yards.
Salt tolerance has limits. A lawn that sits under saltwater after surge or extreme high tides can still be damaged, and we will tell you honestly when a section along the seawall is better as a bed than as turf.

Mulch and wind in Apollo Beach
Light mulch and the steady breeze off Tampa Bay do not mix. Small pine bark nuggets will float in a downpour and scatter across the pool deck or into the canal after a windy afternoon. On exposed waterfront beds we recommend heavier shredded cypress or hardwood-style mulch, which mats together and stays in place, along with a solid steel or concrete curb edge to keep it contained. For low-maintenance beds that will not move at all, some owners choose rubber mulch in play or utility areas. Keep any mulch off the seawall cap and back from the water’s edge.
Apollo Beach, FL at a Glance
Apollo Beach is an unincorporated community in southern Hillsborough County, west of I-75 and reached mainly by US-41 and Apollo Beach Boulevard, with Big Bend Road connecting it to the interstate and to Riverview. One of its best-known landmarks is the TECO Manatee Viewing Center next to the Big Bend power station, where manatees gather in the warm-water discharge canal in winter. The original canal neighborhoods sit along the shoreline, MiraBay lies to the north, and Waterset is on the eastern side toward I-75.
Hurricane season matters here more than almost anywhere else we work. After a storm, the typical Apollo Beach call is for lawn replacement where saltwater sat on the turf, washed-out beds, and debris-scarred lawns that need regrading before new sod.

Timing an install in Apollo Beach
Hurricane season runs June through November, and for waterfront homes we talk through timing openly. A summer install roots fast with afternoon rain, but a freshly laid lawn that gets hit by surge before it roots is a loss. Many canal-front owners prefer to schedule full replacements for late fall, after the peak of storm season, or in early spring with a solid watering plan for the dry April–May stretch. Mulch can be refreshed any time, though it is worth waiting until after a named storm passes if one is in the forecast.
New sod care in Apollo Beach
Plan on daily watering for roughly the first two weeks, then a taper as roots take hold. Wind dries sod faster on exposed lots, so our written plan may call for more water on the bay side than inland. Hillsborough County and SWFWMD rules generally allow extra watering during a new-lawn establishment period (typically any day for the first 30 days and a reduced schedule in days 31–60, within allowed hours). Confirm the current rule with Hillsborough County Public Utilities and keep your install invoice as proof of the date. See our watering rules guide.

Yes, the whole 33572 ZIP code, including the original canal neighborhoods, MiraBay and Waterset, with no trip charge.
St. Augustine is one of the more salt-tolerant warm-season sods, and Floratam is the usual choice for sunny waterfront yards. No grass survives long under standing saltwater, though.
Switch to a heavier shredded mulch like cypress, which mats together, and add a solid edge. Light pine bark nuggets float and blow away easily in bay wind.
Yes. We remove the dead turf, regrade any washed-out areas with fill sand, and lay fresh St. Augustine. It is worth flushing salt from the soil with fresh water or heavy rain before re-sodding.
It can be done, and summer rain helps rooting. On exposed waterfront lots, many owners prefer late fall or early spring to avoid a surge hitting an unrooted lawn. We will talk through the risk honestly.
Yes. Both have HOA guidelines for landscaping, so get architectural approval first. We can provide sod and mulch specs for your submission.
It can work on inland, more sheltered lots. On the most exposed waterfront yards we usually recommend St. Augustine for its salt tolerance.
